Marathon Sunday
I cheer for runners in five languages.
Marathon Sunday in New York is one of my very favorite days of the year. I ran the marathon here four times in the 1990s, and have been cheering annually ever since. Although I registered this year, I didn’t get to run because injury prevented me from training.
Nonetheless, I did get to offer verbal encouragement, quite loudly, to runners from dozens of countries. I cheered in five languages. My favorite was Spanish, but I also threw in German, French, and Italian (I am counting English as my fifth).
Every year, for hours after people start crossing the finish line, the streets of the Upper West Side are clogged with people wearing foil wraps to stay warm. The visual effect is amusing—kind of like a bunch of barely ambulatory potatoes. I mean that in a friendly way; I myself have been one of those potatoes.

I understand your amusement! My office sits right over an area where the Marine Corps Marathon sets up to give people post-run massages. We are also across the street from the metro so you get to see everyone going to the race, looking all hale and hearty, and then return, barely able to walk (but also wrapped like potatoes)!
