German Language Learning Club

4 German, Organizations, Classes/Conversation, Social, Kids

March 10, 2013

Skill Level  Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

Yorkville historian Kathy Jolowicz founded this club in 1990, which, according to the website, is “keeping Yorkville/Kleindeutschland’s Heritage Alive.” Yorkville refers to a swathe of the Upper East Side once heavily populated with Germans, and Kleindeutschland means “Little Germany,” as it was also sometimes known.

The organization offers classes of all levels for both children and adults. I visited some at P.S. 169 on the East Side, and I enjoyed myself thoroughly.

The German Language Learning Club also has a monthly Stammtisch (translating roughly as “regulars’ table,” like at a bar or pub) that is open to German-Americans, native Germans, and German fans generally. People come together to speak German, eat German, and drink German. The location is Heidelberg Restaurant, which is on Second Avenue between 85th and 86th streets.
