An Italian friend of mine told me that in her experience, the Italian Meetups were more like pickup opportunities. That doesn’t seem like such a bad thing, since dating a native speaker of your target language—especially one who is not too attached to the idea of speaking English at all times—is the best way to learn Italian. Or really any language.
