Jackson Heights, Queens, for Many Languages

5 General, Hindi, Korean, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Neighborhoods

March 10, 2013

This is a fantastically polyglottal community in northwestern Queens. Take the subway to Roosevelt Avenue/74th Street and you will find yourself in possibly the most diverse community in the world.

You can hear massive amounts of Spanish along Roosevelt Avenue, but throughout the area, expect extra-English conversations and a stunning array of international products. In this neighborhood I have seen and heard Korean, Bengali, Russian, Polish, Spanish, Hindi, Urdu, Tibetan, and many other languages.

Jackson Heights even inspired a recent play, 167 Tongues, whose very title celebrates the area’s linguistic and cultural diversity.

If you like to eat, shop, and/or speak internationally, come to Jackson Heights!
