Spanish Harlem, Manhattan

4 Spanish, Neighborhoods

March 10, 2013

This neighborhood covers a large swathe of Manhattan, from East 96th Street between Fifth Avenue and the East River up to 142nd Street. Among its diverse population are people with Puerto Rican, Mexican, and Dominican roots.

El Museo del Barrio, a museum focusing on Latin American and Caribbean culture, is located at Fifth and 104th.

The photos in this entry were taken on or near 116th Street.

This neighborhood was historically known for La Marqueta, a once-thriving marketplace under the elevated Metro North tracks on Park Avenue between 111th and 116th streets. There customers from all over New York could buy hard-to-find ethnic foods.

The market is long past its 1950s and 1960s peak, but on the New York City Economic Development Corporation’s website is information about the city’s current attempt to rejuvenate it. Merchant applications are being sought!
