Now an Official Big Apple Greeter!

Today I went to my orientation session to be a Big Apple Greeter. As a Big Apple Greeter, my (volunteer) job will be to greet visitors to New York City and show them how a New Yorker lives. For example, wander around my favorite neighborhoods and give them an idea of where the cool(ish?) kids hang out. 

My plan is to hang out only with visitors who don’t speak English. That way I can practice other languages.

The orientation took place downtown in the Municipal Building at 1 Centre Street, which is where my husband and I picked up our marriage license back in 1999.

I won’t be offering my greeting services in Persian any time soon—no way can I produce four hours of Persian, since I am still working on basic conjugations—but German, French, Spanish, and (I hope) Italian and Portuguese will all be fair game.

So, send me your non-English-speaking, New York City-visiting loved ones, per favore, por favor, bitte, s’il vous plaît.
